Monster Hunter Freedom 2
Monster Hunter Freedom 2 from 2007 was a direct continuation of the portable hit on the PSP and also the biggest leap the series had made up to that point. Instead of reworking another older PS2 title, it was a massive expansion of Freedom's own concept - Capcom significantly increased the number of quests, weapon types, and armor variants, so players suddenly had access to content that exceeded the scope of the first Freedom several times over. While the first Freedom was essentially a port and adaptation of existing PS2 content, Freedom 2 was already built as its own portable entry designed from the ground up for the PSP and its audience.
The overall structure of the game changed too: new locations to explore were added, the roster of huntable monsters expanded with more unique species, and the crafting system offered a much deeper upgrade tree with a larger number of materials that needed to be gathered and combined. Freedom 2 also noticeably strengthened its focus on online and local multiplayer - this was the entry that became a social phenomenon in Japan, with players gathering in game centers and at home to hunt the toughest monsters together and share progress across the extensive quest list. For Western players, it was also the first entry with a truly large amount of content able to occupy dozens to hundreds of hours, not just a shorter add-on to the PS2 original. In scope and ambition, Freedom 2 thus set a bar that later portable entries in the series kept returning to for a long time, and many players still remember it today as the version where they poured dozens of hours and hundreds of quests into their PSP.
Why play it: Freedom 2 will appeal to players who already know the series' basic formula and want a version with significantly more content, monsters, and gear than the first portable entry offered. It's the choice for those who want to invest dozens of hours into a portable Monster Hunter and enjoy it more as a complex, long-term game than as quick entertainment on the go - and who don't mind that it's still an older, harsher, and less explanatory design than what current entries offer.
