Dragon Quest XI S: Echoes of an Elusive Age - Definitive Edition
Dragon Quest XI S: Echoes of an Elusive Age – Definitive Edition is an expanded version of the Japanese RPG that arrived on Xbox One after players on other platforms had already enjoyed the game. The story follows a young man marked with the Sign of the Lost One, who sets out on a journey across a vast fantasy world to uncover his destiny and stand against a dark force threatening the entire continent. The game sticks to the genre's classic formula: turn-based combat, exploring towns and dungeons, gathering gear, and gradually filling out the party with distinctive companions who have their own motivations and side story arcs.
On the mechanical side, the game excels with its system of so-called Pep Powers, special combined attacks characters unleash once pumped up in battle, as well as an elaborate blacksmithing system for upgrading gear. The Definitive Edition additionally adds the option to switch to retro 2D graphics in the style of the series' older entries, English and Japanese voice acting, and new chapters expanding the story after the main plotline is completed. Visually, the game benefits from an art style inspired by the work of Akira Toriyama, which gives the world a fairy-tale yet detailed atmosphere, complemented by a grand orchestral score.
Contemporary reception was extremely positive; the game was praised for how elegantly it combines old-school game design principles with modern production values, and many players and journalists called it one of the most accessible entry points into the JRPG genre for newcomers. It also earned praise for managing to avoid the excessive complexity of modern RPGs while still offering dozens of hours of content, side quests, and hidden locations for players who want to spend even more time in its world. Even years later, Dragon Quest XI feels like a clear-cut, kind-hearted, and honestly crafted reminder of what makes the genre appealing – and on Xbox One it also ranks among the most expansive and longest-playing RPG titles available on the platform, especially for players coming from the world of western RPGs.
Why play it: Anyone looking for an accessible yet content-rich entry into the JRPG genre will find dozens of hours of honestly crafted content here, without the needless complexity of modern RPGs.
