A remaster of the original 2004 Fable with higher resolution and an unchanged gameplay core.

Fable Anniversary is a remastered version of the original 2004 Fable, which brought reworked graphics, higher resolution, modernized controls, and achievements to Xbox One while keeping the original gameplay core and story structure practically unchanged. The player follows the hero's fate from childhood in the peaceful village of Oakvale, through training at the Heroes' Guild, to adulthood, when his choices between good and evil gradually leave their mark on the character's appearance and abilities.

The game combines a melee combat system, archery, and magic, which can be switched between smoothly even in the middle of combat, with an open world full of side quests, trading, marrying townsfolk, raising a family, and moral choices that affect the character's reputation and the reactions of the surrounding townspeople and villagers. The emphasis on how choices shape the hero's appearance and behavior, and how good or evil deeds gradually leave their mark on his face, was one of the most distinctive elements of the original game and remained unchanged in the remaster, supplemented only by cosmetic and technical improvements for the console generation of the time. The atmosphere is rounded out by a slightly fairy-tale, English-flavored world with villages, taverns, and forests, a humorous narrative tone, and music evoking a British fantasy fairy tale laced with dark humor.

Fable Anniversary was received as a solid, if not groundbreaking, tribute to the original game, praised mainly for its nostalgia and for making the classic accessible to a new generation of Xbox One players who had missed the original Fable on the older Xbox. Critics occasionally pointed out dated gameplay elements and the simplicity of the combat system, which the remaster did not address and left unchanged, yet Fable remains remembered today as one of the titles that defined a distinctive approach to choice, morality, and building the hero's reputation in action RPGs on Microsoft consoles.

Why play it: For players who missed the first Fable on the older Xbox, this is a convenient way to experience the story of choice and the hero's reputation – albeit with a dated combat system that the remaster does not address.
