Nighttime street racing with licensed tuning from the DUB brand.

Midnight Club 3: DUB Edition, developed by Rockstar San Diego, combined open-world nighttime street racing with a licensed partnership with the tuning magazine and brand DUB, giving the game access to authentic, real-world tuning parts and design elements popular in the American customization scene. Players raced through freely designed, traffic-dense replicas of cities like San Diego, Atlanta and Detroit, with the open structure allowing not just linear races but also free-roaming exploration of the city and its shortcuts off the main tracks.

The vehicle customization system was among the most elaborate in the genre, covering real components from wheels to hydraulic systems to neon lighting, inspired by the aesthetic of tuning TV shows popular in that era. The vehicle roster was also unusually varied, offering not just sports coupes but motorcycles, luxury sedans and SUVs that all handled noticeably differently. In terms of gameplay, the game emphasized high speed, risky maneuvering through dense traffic and so-called reputation points earned for driving style, which unlocked further vehicles and content. Races didn't follow a marked track but ran between checkpoints, so choosing your route through the city was itself a skill. The vehicle physics model leaned arcade-like but still delivered a satisfying feel of control at high speeds, and technically the game impressively kept a smooth pace even in dense traffic.

Midnight Club 3 became a commercially very successful title and, alongside Need for Speed Underground, helped define street tuning racing as one of the most popular genres on the PlayStation 2 in the mid-2000s. The later expanded Remix edition added further cities and vehicles and is today considered the most complete version of the game, one some players remember chiefly for the merciless difficulty of its final races.
