The Walking Dead
The Walking Dead from Telltale Games, released in 2012, is based on Robert Kirkman's comic book source material rather than the TV series, and tells its own story of the former professor Lee Everett, who, shortly after the outbreak of the zombie apocalypse, takes in the orphaned girl Clementine and tries to protect her in an increasingly dangerous world. The game builds on the classic adventure structure with dialogue choices and quick-time action sequences, but its true core lies in moral decisions with far-reaching consequences — after each important choice, the game reminds the player with a message that other characters will remember it.
The episodic structure of five installments gradually builds an intimate relationship between Lee and Clementine, while the player faces dilemmas with no clearly correct answer, often under harsh time pressure that demands an immediate decision. Supporting characters such as the distrustful ally Kenny or a fractured family of survivors give the story the feeling of a real group of people fighting to survive, where every loss hurts all the more the longer the player has traveled with that character. The comic-book-inspired art style and sensitively chosen, quiet music round out the emotional tone, which differs markedly from the action-driven approach of most other zombie titles of the time. On Xbox 360, the game was released digitally via Xbox Live Arcade episode by episode, later supplemented by the standalone episode 400 Days.
The title was exceptionally successful both critically and commercially, winning numerous Game of the Year awards, and is considered a project that fundamentally revived interest in narrative-driven adventures centered on player choice. Its influence is visible throughout the following wave of so-called cinematic adventures, including later seasons from Telltale itself as well as rival studios, such as Life Is Strange. To this day it is praised above all for the powerful emotional impact of the first season's finale, which ranks among the most discussed endings of its video game generation.
Why play it: Thanks to its powerful emotional impact and choices that genuinely shape the story, this is a title that fundamentally revived interest in narrative-driven adventures and inspired an entire wave of similar games.
