An arcade flight simulator set in the fictional Strangereal with dozens of licensed aircraft.

Ace Combat 6: Fires of Liberation is an arcade flight simulator set in the fictional country of Strangereal, telling the story of a war of liberation from the perspective of a fighter pilot. In the campaign, the player gradually gains access to dozens of licensed and fictional aircraft, from classic fighters through bombers to experimental machines, and each mission presents a different tactical situation - from escorting convoys to defending a city to destroying enemy bases. The controls are deliberately accessible and arcade-like, so the game focuses more on flashy dogfights and spectacular explosions than on realistic flight physics.

On Xbox 360, it was one of the platform's few truly exclusive franchises and, at the same time, a technological leap for the whole series - the game was the first in the line to fully exploit the power of the new generation, with expansive battlefields, dense traffic of units on the ground and in the air, and dramatic weather changes that affect both visibility and tactics. The soundtrack was accompanied by orchestral music underscoring the epic tone of each mission, and radio communication between pilots gives the battles a cinematic atmosphere. The game also offered online multiplayer for battles involving multiple players at once, which at the time was rather the exception for flight action games.

Contemporary reviews praised above all the scope and variety of the missions, the number of available aircraft, and the overall audiovisual quality, which was among the best the Xbox 360 offered in the genre. They also highlighted the dynamic battlefield, where the situation in the sky and on the ground changes depending on how the player performs in a mission, so the same scenario can look noticeably different on a second playthrough. It was precisely its exclusivity on this console that made Ace Combat 6 a sought-after title among owners of other platforms who wanted to try the series, and many considered it one of the reasons to get an Xbox 360 in the first place. To this day, the game works as an entertaining, accessible demonstration of how flight action games can play like a blockbuster without burdening players with complicated simulation - and for fans of the series it remains one of the most fondly remembered entries of the whole console generation.

Why play it: For owners of other platforms, Xbox 360 exclusivity was one of the reasons to get the console - the dynamic battlefield and scope of missions still work today as an accessible, blockbuster showcase of flight action games.
