Ace Combat 5: The Unsung War
Ace Combat 5: The Unsung War expanded the series' concept with an emphasis on teamwork — the player, a pilot codenamed Blaze, flies with the Wardog squadron and during missions issues radio commands to their wingmen, directing formations, assigning attack targets, and deciding whether they should cover the player's own aircraft or independently eliminate enemy targets. The story takes place in a conflict between Osea and Yuktobania and places greater emphasis on the political backdrop of the war, propaganda, and relationships between squadron members than earlier entries, as the player gradually discovers that the real enemy may not be where they first looked.
The gameplay stays arcade-style but adds deeper wingman management and more varied mission types, from escorting bombers to defending bases and night-time raid operations. The visuals pushed the series further with more detailed aircraft models and larger battle scenes featuring dozens of enemy and allied units in the sky at once, which on PS2 hardware required careful optimization to keep the frame rate stable even with large formations. Radio communication between pilots in flight gives the missions a cinematic pace and the atmosphere of a real war operation.
Upon release the game was received as one of the peaks of the series on PS2 and reinforced Ace Combat's reputation as a brand that can combine accessible arcade action with an elaborate story. This was helped by the scope of the story's cast and their fates, which make the campaign feel more like a war drama with airplanes than a sequence of isolated missions. The orchestral music again ranks among the game's strongest points, and many of its themes have remained fan favorites for years. Even now the game feels like one of the generation's most comprehensive aerial titles, though squadron control and the opening tutorial may initially feel less welcoming to today's players than more modern entries in the genre.
Why play it: Anyone looking for aerial action with an elaborate story and an orchestral score whose themes have stuck with fans to this day will find Unsung War one of the peaks of the series on PS2, even though squadron control initially demands more from the player.
