Ace Combat X2: Joint Assault
Ace Combat X2: Joint Assault is the series' second standalone entry developed directly for the PlayStation Portable, continuing the accessible arcade action of its predecessor. The player again climbs into the cockpits of dozens of licensed aircraft, flying short, cinematic missions full of dogfights, bombing runs, and defensive actions over fictional battlefields. The story's new twist is a joint operation between two formerly hostile factions who must join forces against a new threat, giving the series a somewhat different tone than its usual tale of two warring nations.
Compared to the first PSP entry, Joint Assault expands the vehicle roster with attack helicopters and adds mission types focused on ground support, so the gameplay isn't limited to fighter dogfights alone. The game also simplifies and speeds up the campaign structure compared to the first entry's Strategic Mode, with missions following each other more directly, which suits short handheld play sessions better. The graphics engine was improved within the PSP's limits, and the game also offers online multiplayer over an internet connection, not just the local wireless network of its predecessor.
Joint Assault also adjusts aircraft loadouts with special abilities tied to specific pilots, giving the choice of equipment a slightly different tactical dimension than simply ranking planes by raw performance. The drawn cutscenes and orchestral score remain faithful to the series and, together with support for the PSP's widescreen display, form an audiovisual package that feels surprisingly cohesive on a small screen. As in the first entry, missions here are built to be played in shorter chunks, which remains one of the main strengths of the series' entire X sub-line.
Why play it: Joint Assault is a good choice for players who already know the first PSP entry and want a smoother, more action-packed sequel with a more varied roster of vehicles, including helicopters. It will also appeal to those looking for arcade aerial combat focused on fast missions, without having to manage a broader strategic layer.
