A completely reworked Gradius exclusive to the X68000; rearranged stages and new sections.

Nemesis '90 Kai is a peculiar and highly regarded piece of the Sharp X68000 catalog: a completely reworked version of the classic Gradius that Konami prepared exclusively for this computer. The foundation remains familiar — the ship Vic Viper, the upgrade gauge, and progression through planets full of volcanoes, Moai statues, and biomechanical corridors — but everything underwent a thorough revision. The stages are rearranged and expanded with new sections, enemy placement differs, alternative paths were added, along with several bosses that weren't in the original at all. The result feels like both a remake and a sequel at once, offering enough new content to surprise even players who know the original by heart.

Technically, it's a title created with awareness of the target platform's capabilities, not merely a straight port. The graphics use a high color count and several scrolling layers, the backgrounds are more detailed than in the original, and the whole game runs very smoothly. The music, however, is what players remember most often: the Gradius tracks are rearranged for the X68000's sound chip and expanded with sampled drums, so they sound richer and punchier than their older versions. The atmosphere combines the stark solitude of space with the sense of relentless pressure typical of the series, and the new music gives it a surprisingly modern edge.

At the time, this was a gift to fans of the platform and one of Konami's last major achievements on Japanese computers. The title remained an exclusive, which gradually made it a collector's prized item and one of the main reasons to bother with X68000 emulation. Its influence on the genre is indirect but interesting: it showed that a classic can be reworked for stronger hardware without losing its essence, an approach we see today in countless remasters. For today's player, it's a very well-playable shooter that can be recommended even as a first introduction to the Gradius series.
