Castlevania rebuilt from the ground up, long unavailable in the West; a larger castle.

Akumajou Dracula for the Sharp X68000 is one of the most significant entries in the Castlevania series, and also a game that remained practically unavailable to Western players for many years. Konami took Simon Belmont's original story and rebuilt it from the ground up: the castle is larger, the levels are newly designed, and in several places the player chooses which way to continue, so the path to Dracula isn't the same every time. The core gameplay remains true to the series' roots — slow, deliberate movement, a whip with three upgrade levels, and secondary weapons like holy water, an axe or a cross boomerang. Precise jumps and knowledge of enemy behavior are essential, since a hit player often falls into a pit before they can react.

Technically, it's one of the most beautiful games on the platform. The high color count allowed for detailed Gothic interiors, stained-glass windows, burning chandeliers, and the surfaces of underground lakes, and the game also plays with effects like rotation or shifting lighting. The soundtrack rearranges the series' classic themes for the FM chip and adds new tracks that rank among the best ever heard in Castlevania; the combination of grim melody and rhythmic drive gives the castle its characteristic atmosphere of horror with a Gothic melodramatic edge.

At the time, the title was seen as the pinnacle of what Japanese computers had to offer, and its later reworking for the Super Famicom helped spread awareness of it beyond Japan. Its influence on the genre lies mainly in showing that a classic Castlevania could be richer, longer and visually more ambitious without losing its harsh core, and a direct line runs from here to later entries in the series. Today the game is still demanding and requires patience, but it rewards players with excellent level design and an atmosphere that holds up against anything from the nineties. For lovers of Gothic action, it's a mandatory stop.
