Riddle School

Adventura 2006 Jonochrome ⏱ Short · up to ~3 h

A point-and-click escape series set in a school; the foundation of a cult saga on Newgrounds.

Riddle School is a point-and-click escape series in which the player takes on the role of schoolboy Phillip Whiskers, trying to get out of the school building where he was unfairly sent. Gameplay is based on the classic adventure-game principle — clicking around the scene, collecting items, and combining them to unlock new rooms and gradually get closer to escaping. The humor is childishly direct, full of absurd situations and exaggeration, which sets the game apart from more serious escape titles of the time.

Jonochrome gradually expanded the series with further installments in which Phillip found himself in increasingly bizarre situations, from escaping a zoo through spaceships to an alternate reality, while the basic recipe — click, collect, combine — remained unchanged throughout the series. It was precisely the simplicity of the controls and the accessibility of the humor that made Riddle School one of the most-followed series on Newgrounds, where it became an entry point into the genre for many younger players who were only just discovering Flash adventures.

The series also inspired its own fan community creating parodies and derivative works, which confirms how strongly Phillip's story resonated with the audience of the mid-2000s. Riddle School is still remembered today as one of the cornerstones of Newgrounds culture.

Why play it: A great entry point into the point-and-click escape genre for younger or less experienced players — the puzzles are undemanding and the humor is lighthearted.
