Fancy Pants Adventure
Fancy Pants Adventure showed that a Flash platformer could look, and above all move, just as smoothly as a professional console game. The player controls a simple stick-drawn character dressed in bold striped pants, running through levels full of loops, ramps, and enemies, with movement that is remarkably fluid — the character accelerates briskly, slides across the ground, and bounces off enemies with a grace that was rare in Flash games of the time.
Brad Borne bet precisely on animation and the feel of movement as the game's main draw, and he succeeded so well that the game quickly became one of the most popular titles on Newgrounds. The simple visual style — black-and-white line art with colored accents — worked as a practical solution for low performance requirements, but also gave the game a distinctive look that players still remember today.
The success of the first installment led to several sequels, through which the game gradually grew with new abilities, weapons, and more extensive level design, without losing its basic emphasis on how well the character controls. Fancy Pants Adventure is often cited as one of the examples that even the technically limited Flash environment could host a platformer with a feel for movement comparable to professional titles.
Why play it: For platformer fans who care most about the feel of movement — the controls are so polished that simply running through a level is fun in itself.
