Bloxorz

Puzzle 2007 Damien Clarke ⏱ Medium · ~3–10 h 🧩 Puzzle

Roll a block across platforms into the goal hole; an elegant puzzle game without frills.

Bloxorz is a puzzle game in which the player rolls a rectangular block across platforms full of holes, trapdoors, and switches, with the sole objective of getting it upright into the goal opening. The controls are trivial - the four arrow keys shift the block one or two edges at a time - but each level forces you to think several moves ahead in space, since a single wrong move means falling off the edge and restarting. Bridges opened by buttons, teleport blocks, and splittable cubes are gradually introduced, so the game smoothly expands its repertoire of mechanics without ever explaining more than necessary.

It was created in 2007 by Damien Clark as a reworking of Aaron Steed's earlier game "Result," and quickly became one of the defining titles of the Flash scene at the time, played on Newgrounds and later portals like Miniclip. The game's strength lay in its purity: no points, no character unlocks, just a sequence of increasingly clever puzzles that the player works through at their own pace. This very simplicity made it a model for numerous clones and classroom demonstrations of game logic, since the principle of rolling a block can be programmed in just a few lines of code while still offering dozens of hours of puzzles.

To this day, Bloxorz works as a demonstration of how little is needed for good puzzle design - no story, no graphical flair, just space, rules, and the player's patience. The Flash technology the game was built on is now dead, so today it can mainly be found on archival Flash portals that preserve old games through emulation.

Why play it: For anyone who likes clean spatial puzzles without distractions and wants to test their patience on a set of progressively harder levels.
