The Last Stand
The Last Stand casts the player as a survivor of a zombie apocalypse who must search surrounding buildings by day for weapons, ammunition, and boards to barricade windows, while at nightfall the barricade must be defended against increasingly strong waves of the infected. Control combines mouse and keyboard movement - aiming and shooting at dusk alongside simple decisions about where to head during the day, knowing that every expedition risks losing time and health. This day-night cycle gave the game a tension that web shooters of the time usually lacked, forcing the player to plan every expedition based on how much daylight is left.
The 2007 game was created by Con Artist Games and quickly became one of the most popular zombie titles of the Flash era, partly because it combined elements of survival, simple RPG character progression, and real-time action in a way that was unusual for the web at the time. Its success led to several sequels, through which the series gradually grew to include new mechanics, more locations, and a more elaborate selection of companions, but it was the first installment that defined the basic formula of scavenging by day and defending by night, on which later installments continued to build.
Today, The Last Stand is purely an archival matter, since it's built on Flash technology that browsers stopped supporting; playing it requires a specialized archive or emulation.
Why play it: For fans of zombie survival who will appreciate the tense day-night rhythm and want to get to know the game that stood at the roots of an entire beloved series.
