Loved

Plošinovka 2010 Alexander Ocias ⏱ Short · up to ~3 h

A short atmospheric platformer with a narrator who judges your every choice.

Loved is among the games that prove even a few minutes of gameplay can leave a strong impression if built on a bold concept. Independent creator Alexander Ocias offered a short platformer in 2010 set in a stark black-and-white world, accompanied by a mechanical, cold narrator's voice. It constantly asks the player binary decisions, jump or don't jump, go left or right, and reacts to every choice with a personal, often uncomfortably judgmental comment.

The true essence of the game doesn't lie in the platforming itself, but in the psychological experiment the narrator plays with the player, the more the player tries to defy or, conversely, comply with the narrator, the more clearly the game shows how easily one can be manipulated through guilt or obedience. The visually stark, almost monochromatic world heightens the feeling of alienation and claustrophobia, while the short playtime means the whole experience can be completed in a few minutes, which only underscores its concentrated power. Loved is often cited as an example of how a web game can function as a work of art just as well as entertainment.

The game is among the titles that helped define the so-called art games genre at the turn of the 2000s and 2010s, that is, web games built more on mood and idea than on traditional gameplay challenge, and as a Flash production it now requires browser emulation, since native Flash support no longer exists.

Why play: For players open to short, conceptual experiences, who appreciate when a game deliberately manipulates their feelings instead of offering a traditional challenge.
