A phenomenon coded and drawn entirely by one person; an escape from the corporate grind to a farm.

Stardew Valley is a phenomenon of the independent scene, programmed, drawn and composed entirely by a single person - Eric Barone, going by the name ConcernedApe. The player inherits a rundown farm from their grandfather and leaves the corporate town of Joja Corporation for the peaceful Pelican Town valley, where they gradually restore fields, grow crops, raise animals, fish, mine in caves full of enemies, and build relationships with a colorful community of villagers, some of whom can even be courted and eventually married.

The game is openly inspired by the Japanese Harvest Moon series, but expands it with much deeper RPG elements, combat in randomized mines, a timing-based fishing minigame, and an extensive crafting system for building structures, tools and machines for processing raw materials. Each day has limited energy and length, so playing relies on small-scale planning - what else to get done before dark, what to invest money in, and when it pays off to process the harvest into a more expensive product instead of selling it directly. A real calendar with seasons affects what crops can be grown and what festivals take place in town, giving the game a natural, meditative rhythm. Villagers have their own daily schedules, birthdays and gradually revealed personal stories, which makes the valley feel inhabited even after dozens of hours.

Huge replayability also stems from the many ways the game can be played - from purely farming-focused to a community project of restoring the abandoned Community Center to competing with the corporate Joja Mart, with several farm types available that favor different playstyles. Pixel visuals and a calm soundtrack that changes with the season make playing more of a relaxing ritual than a challenge. Barone continues to update the game for free with new content, most recently with the extensive 1.6 update featuring new crops and locations. Stardew Valley remains to this day a symbol of what a single dedicated creator can achieve.
