A nostalgic collection of the best boards and minigames from the first five entries, with no unnecessary novelty.

Mario Party Superstars is a nostalgic celebration of the best moments from the series' twenty-year history, assembled from carefully selected boards and minigames from the first five entries released on the Nintendo 64. Instead of experimenting with new rules, the game focuses on returning to the basics fans loved - the classic turn-based journey across boards full of stars and coins, random events, and scheming between players who can steal stars from each other or sabotage progress using items bought from the shopkeeper Kamek.

The five chosen boards, such as Peach's Birthday Cake or Space Land, are among the most beloved in the series' history and have been visually reworked while keeping the original layout and spirit, including the placement of crossroads and traps that longtime fans will recall even after all these years. The collection of one hundred twenty minigames draws from the franchise's entire history and offers variety ranging from quick reflex duels to team challenges to strategic puzzles, with the controls adapted to the modern Joy-Con scheme, eliminating the wild analog-stick spinning that used to wreck Nintendo 64 controllers. Also new is online multiplayer support for both boards and minigames, allowing the game to be played remotely with friends, which previous entries in the series lacked; on top of that come optional rules like a shortened number of turns or turning off the time limit on turns.

Critics praised precisely this return to the proven, less aggressive board design compared to newer entries, which had been accused of excessive randomness. Visually the game relies on clean, colorful graphics and rearranged versions of the original melodies from the Nintendo 64 era, which round off the nostalgic feeling. Mario Party Superstars became a favorite choice for family game nights thanks to its combination of nostalgia, accessibility and a solid amount of content for a reasonable price, and it remains to this day a title that gets pulled out on Switch whenever a bunch of people gather around one TV.
