Into the Breach
Into the Breach is a compact turn-based tactics game from the two-person studio Subset Games, creators of the cult hit FTL: Faster Than Light, in which a team of three mechs from the future travels through time to defend the last remnants of humanity against an invasion of giant insects called the Vek. Unlike most tactics games in the XCOM genre, there is no hit-chance randomness here - all actions are entirely deterministic, and the player always sees exactly where and how hard the enemy will strike on their next turn, which makes the game more of a logic puzzle than a game of chance.
The key mechanic is thus prevention rather than direct elimination: it's often better to just push an enemy away from the target it's about to destroy than to kill it, because protected buildings provide the power needed to keep the timeline going. A pushed Vek damages whatever it collides with, so positioning becomes the main weapon, and the player literally builds chains of collisions. Each map is a small, compact grid of a few tiles, but the density of decisions per turn is enormous, and a single mistake can quickly collapse the whole defense. The campaign is short, usually a single longer sitting, and when it falls, one pilot along with their accumulated experience can be sent back in time for a new attempt, elegantly linking failure with the narrative.
The game offers several distinct mech squads with their own abilities and synergies, from ice to fire to electric vehicles, which supports replayability and experimentation with strategies; each squad is essentially a different puzzle ruleset. Minimalist yet imaginative pixel art and a sparse, atmospheric soundtrack complement an overall meditative yet intense experience, which thanks to its short missions suits portable play excellently. Into the Breach is still cited as a textbook example of an elegant, cleanly designed turn-based system without unnecessary complexity, and the Advanced Edition expansion added more mechs, enemies and missions for free.
