Released right into lockdown and became a phenomenon; building an island from scratch with Tom Nook.

Animal Crossing: New Horizons launched in March 2020, at the exact moment the world got stuck in lockdowns because of the pandemic, and it became an unexpected cultural phenomenon and refuge for millions of players. The game leaves behind the series' established towns and puts the player in the role of the first resident of an uninhabited island, who, with the help of the raccoon-run company Tom Nook, gradually builds it up from scratch – from a tent through their own house to an extensive village full of animal neighbors. Progress isn't driven by experience or levels but by small tasks and mortgage installments, creating a calm, gentle rhythm where nothing is ever on fire.

A key element is real time: the game runs according to the actual date and clock, seasons, holidays, and the day-night cycle all change, which supports a long-term, meditative rhythm of play rather than a chase after a goal. The new terraforming mechanic allows you to change the terrain, build bridges and ladders, and move entire rivers, so every island has a completely unique look reflecting its owner's taste; the community around sharing island designs became its own phenomenon on social media. Gathering fruit, catching fish and bugs for the museum, crafting furniture using DIY recipes, and visiting neighboring islands via Nintendo Switch Online form the core of an endless loop of activities, complemented by the turnip exchange, the one genuinely tense part of the game.

The game also allows for rich creative expression through a clothing and pattern design tool, with which players crafted everything from paving tiles to replicas of designer outfits. Thanks to its soothing atmosphere, gentle acoustic music that changes every hour, cute graphics, and the absence of any pressure to perform, New Horizons became a symbol of the pandemic era and one of the best-selling exclusive Switch titles ever. Subsequent free updates added characters like café owner Brewster or musician K.K. Slider, and the paid Happy Home Paradise expansion added design work on other residents' vacation homes.
