Merges the worlds of its two predecessors into a continent where life is short and ritually predetermined.

Xenoblade Chronicles 3 merges the worlds of the previous two games – Bionis and Alrest – into a single continent, Aionios, split between two warring nations, Keves and Agnus, whose inhabitants live a short life predetermined from birth, ended by the Homecoming ritual the moment they reach adulthood. The main group of six heroes, three from each side, meet in the middle of a battle and, thanks to a mystical power, merge into what's called Ouroboros, a powerful fusion form that transcends the boundary between the warring nations, beginning their shared search for the truth about who is really behind the endless war.

The combat system builds on the mechanics of both previous installments, combining battlefield positioning, Chain Attacks, and tactical party roles similar to classes from MMOs, such as tank, healer, or damage dealer, with the ability to switch party members' classes on the fly. The party is also the largest in the series – seven characters at once, including temporary guests – and switching to Ouroboros form mid-battle serves as a powerful trump card with its own attacks and its own risk of overheating. The world of Aionios is vast and seamless, dotted with strongholds called Colonies, which the player gradually liberates and expands with new inhabitants, equipment, and side stories that rank among the best-written in the entire series.

The narrative is among the darkest and most philosophically demanding in the series, dealing with themes of death, the meaning of a short life, and the cycle of endless conflict, though unlike its predecessors it's delivered in a more sober tone with significantly fewer anime clichés. The Future Redeemed expansion offers an epilogue that brings together characters from all three games and also brings back Shulk and Rex. Critics praised Xenoblade Chronicles 3 as the most emotionally powerful and complex entry in the series, though also the most demanding to understand without knowledge of the previous two installments, and at the same time as one of the technically most ambitious titles ever released on Switch.
