A horizontal shmup where the ship can aim in multiple directions; run-and-gun elements and multi-phase bosses.

Guardian Force is a horizontal shooter whose Saturn port arrived on the console late in its life as a conversion of an arcade original. The game departs from the classic shmup formula in that the player's ship can aim in multiple directions at once and carries hints of run-and-gun action, requiring careful reaction to enemies approaching from various angles of the screen, not just from the front, and quick switching between several weapon types depending on the situation. Levels are punctuated by massive bosses with several combat phases, placing emphasis on memorizing patterns and gradually refining strategy across repeated playthroughs, with some sequences even requiring the destruction of smaller parts of a boss's body separately before its vulnerable core can be exposed.

Technically, Guardian Force ranks among the more solid genre conversions on Saturn — the action stays smooth even with large numbers of enemies and projectiles on screen, the graphics are detailed and richly colored, with striking explosions and mechanical enemies. The soundtrack rounds out the intensity of the battles with an energetic, electronically tinged score typical of the late 1990s. The game had a limited release and remained practically unknown outside Japan, which today makes it a sought-after collector's title among import players. Among genre fans it is prized specifically for its unconventional multi-directional aiming system, which lends an otherwise genre-traditional shooter a distinctive strategic dimension rarely seen in competing titles, and it still plays today like an interesting, lesser-known departure from the established formula. The combination of carefully designed boss fights and the need to think about multiple directions of fire at once makes Guardian Force a title that rewards patience and repeated play just as much as quick reflexes, and even after all these years it offers an experience that a typical horizontal shmup usually doesn't.

Why play it: For collectors of import titles and shmup fans alike, thanks to its unconventional multi-directional aiming system, which lends the game a distinctive strategic dimension beyond the genre average.
