Shienryu

Shmup 1997 Warashi ⏱ Short · up to ~3 h

A vertical shmup from Warashi; readable enemy-fire design rather than bullet-hell density.

Shienryu is a vertical shooter from Warashi that arrived on Saturn as a port of an arcade title and ranks among the genre's lesser-known but solidly crafted entries from the console's later years. The player controls a fighter jet, flying through classically top-down oriented levels and facing waves of enemies as well as a series of bosses, with the game built on clear, readable enemy-fire patterns rather than the extreme projectile density that later made the so-called bullet-hell shooters famous. Players can collect upgrades to their main weapon as well as support satellites, balancing firepower against movement speed, which lends even relatively short playthroughs a certain depth for repeat play.

Visually, Shienryu feels clean and technically solid — animations are smooth, backgrounds are detailed with several layers of parallax, and the game maintains a stable pace even in more hectic passages without noticeable frame-rate drops. The sound is rounded out by an energetic, electronically tinged soundtrack that nicely underscores the pace of each level and shifts mood to match the environment the player is currently flying through. It was released only in Japan and remained fairly obscure outside the circle of collectors and genre connoisseurs, which hasn't stopped it from being valued today as one of the Saturn generation's solid, well-balanced vertical shooters. For players looking for a less extreme but precisely crafted alternative to more hectic bullet-hell titles, Shienryu offers a pleasant, still not fully appreciated find worth seeking out even today. Its short playtime goes hand in hand with the high replayability of individual attempts, so players easily find reasons to return for another and another run in pursuit of a cleaner, more precise performance, and this replayability is the main reason the title is still talked about in the score-chasing community today.

Why play it: If you're looking for a less hectic but precisely tuned vertical shooter with fluid action and a moody electronic soundtrack, Shienryu is a solid choice even today.
