Gokujou Parodius
Gokujou Parodius is a Saturn port of Konami's popular arcade shooter, which builds its parodic, comedic tone on the Parodius series, itself a spin-off of the seriously-toned space shooter Gradius. The player chooses from a colorful cast of characters and craft — from traditional fighters to parody forms of animals, mascots, and even a mermaid — and makes their way through colorful, humorously conceived levels full of references to other games and pop culture. The core gameplay, however, remains honestly shmup-based: collecting power-ups from the iconic capsule menu, building a formation of support objects called Options, and battling outlandishly designed bosses that parody enemies from the studio's more famous games and beyond.
The Saturn version handled the technically demanding, color-and-effect-packed arcade original reliably, with smooth action and a faithful reproduction of the cheerful visual style and catchy, melodically varied soundtrack that draws on classic Konami motifs as well as parodic nods to other musical genres. Reception in Japan, where the game was released, was warm — the Parodius series has long enjoyed popularity among Japanese players precisely because of its combination of solid gameplay and lighthearted humor that never slides into cheap parody at the expense of playability. It remains a beloved demonstration that a demanding, readable shmup doesn't have to be seriously toned, and among collectors and genre fans, Gokujou Parodius holds a reputation as an entertaining, accessible title that works even for players who otherwise don't care for classic shooters. Funny animations, exaggerated sound effects, and a constant stream of visual gags make it a great choice for two-player sessions as well, where the humor only multiplies, and many players still recommend it as the ideal first introduction to both the Parodius series and the shmup genre in general, since it's readable and never feels frustrating.
Why play it: Thanks to its cheerful visuals, catchy parodic soundtrack, and lighthearted humor that never comes at the expense of playability, it ranks among Konami's beloved, entertaining shmups.
