Resident Evil Village VR Mode
Resident Evil Village VR Mode brings the entire main story of Resident Evil Village into virtual reality as a free update for PSVR2 owners, without shortening the plot or the playtime. Players once again step into the skin of Ethan Winters, who is trying to save his daughter from a cult worshipping a mutated entity in a snowy Central European village surrounded by castles and underground complexes. In VR, exploring the village, Lady Dimitrescu's castle, and the underground laboratories becomes a much more personal experience — the player physically turns their head to see around corners, aims weapons with their own hand, and enemies can appear literally anywhere in their field of view, which significantly heightens the tension compared to playing on a screen.
Capcom adapted movement, aiming, and environmental interactions for the VR mode so they would work in the brand-new perspective without losing the pace of the more action-heavy sections for which Village is known compared to the series' previous entry. It offers several movement options, from smooth walking to teleportation, so every player can adjust the settings to their own tolerance for motion sickness. Spatial audio plays an even bigger role here than on television — creaking floorboards, distant growls, or a sudden roar from around a corner surround the player from every side, making the village's dark, gothic atmosphere feel much heavier.
After release, the VR mode became one of the main draws for PSVR2 owners and was cited as one of the most intense horror experiences on the platform. It showed that even a large, more action-oriented game full of boss fights can work just as well in VR as more intimate titles, and many players reported replaying the game through the VR mode even though they had already finished it on a screen. To this day it remains one of the most cited reasons to get the headset in the first place, and together with the Resident Evil 4 VR mode forms a pair of titles recommended to new PSVR2 owners as the first choice for trying out the horror genre.
Why play: For horror fans and those who have already finished the game on a screen — the VR mode offers one of the most intense experiences on PSVR2 and is among the first choices for trying out the headset.
