Resident Evil 4 VR Mode

The famous RE4 remake free in VR; reloading and aiming for weak points is now down to your own hands.

Resident Evil 4 VR Mode is a free update to the Resident Evil 4 remake that brings agent Leon Kennedy's entire long campaign into virtual reality on PSVR2. Players once again make their way through the eerily quiet Spanish village infected by the Las Plagas parasite, fight fanatical villagers and mutated bosses, and escort Ashley Graham to safety — but now with their own hands instead of an on-screen controller. Reloading weapons, opening the inventory case, or aiming at enemies' weak points become physical actions in VR, which makes the famous merchant system and the legendary battles with villagers in the opening village feel even more intense than in the original remake.

Technically, this was a very demanding conversion, since Capcom had to adapt a remake designed for classic controls and camera framing into a full stereoscopic perspective without losing the atmosphere or the pace of its action sequences. The game offers several movement and aiming modes so players with varying tolerance for motion sickness can handle it. The intricately modeled village, chapel, and underground laboratories feel far more claustrophobic in VR thanks to spatial perception, and spatial audio — from a distant bell tolling to an enemy's breath around the corner — amplifies the tension the Resident Evil series is known for.

After release, the VR mode was received as one of the most ambitious efforts on PSVR2, since it offered a complete, dozens-of-hours-long game instead of a short demo, and it was free to everyone who already owned the remake. Reviewers and players alike called it one of the most intense ways to experience the remake, since physically reloading and manipulating the inventory add a fresh sense of tension even to scenes players already knew by heart. It is still cited today as proof that even a large action game with many fights and boss battles can work completely naturally in VR, and together with the Resident Evil Village VR mode it stands among the flagship demonstrations of what PSVR2 can do in the survival horror genre.

Why play: For remake owners who want to experience it again as a complete, dozens-of-hours-long VR game for free — physically reloading and handling the inventory add fresh tension to scenes you already know by heart.
