Moss

Plosinovka / puzzle adventura 2023 Polyarc ⏱ Short · up to ~3 h 🧩 Puzzle

A charming platformer where you tilt dioramas as a ghostly presence while the mouse Quill solves puzzles.

Moss casts the player as a kind of guardian spirit who watches over — and directly influences the fate of — a small mouse named Quill, the heroine of this fairy-tale adventure, from a first-person perspective. The player looks into each level as if into a miniature diorama that can be physically turned with the head and body to reveal hidden paths, levers, or enemies, while Quill herself is controlled with a classic controller — running, jumping, wielding a sword, and solving simple mechanical puzzles using systems of pulleys and platforms. The player's role as an ethereal being also allows for direct intervention in the world — lifting objects, activating mechanisms, or even briefly stunning enemies — turning what could be mere observation into active cooperation between two characters.

On PSVR2, the game benefits from higher resolution and HDR to bring out the intricately carved miniature scenery, overgrown ruins, and ancient mechanisms that form the backdrop of Quill's journey. The Sense controllers' haptic feedback and adaptive triggers provide a tactile feel when manipulating mechanisms and objects in the world, and eye tracking contributes to smoother navigation through each diorama. Music blending orchestral motifs with a fairy-tale tone, along with Quill's sensitively animated expressions that react to the player's presence with a glance or gesture, creates an unusually warm and personal relationship between the player and the virtual character.

When it originally launched on PSVR, Moss was praised as one of the most charming proofs that VR can tell a story even without the player themselves running and jumping, and the PSVR2 version only reinforces that impression with sharper visuals and more refined haptics. Critics at the time particularly highlighted how naturally the game blends the role of an observing viewer with that of an active companion, without either role feeling like a mere afterthought to the other. It still ranks among the titles recommended as an accessible, gentle introduction to the VR adventure genre, suitable even for players just getting acquainted with virtual reality who are looking for a less intense alternative to the platform's action and horror titles.

Why play: For players looking for a gentle, less intense introduction to VR adventures — blending the role of an observing viewer with an active companion feels natural, and the sharper visuals on PSVR2 only strengthen the experience.
