Moss: Book II
Moss: Book II picks up the story of the little mouse Quill right where the first game left off, expanding both the world and the mechanics with new abilities and larger, more interconnected levels. The player once again follows the adventure from the perspective of an ethereal being who intervenes in the action by manipulating the environment, activating mechanisms, or briefly incapacitating enemies, but Quill now also gains the ability to temporarily take control of ancient guardian robots, opening up new ways to solve puzzles and fight enemies. Combat is generally more complex, and systems of pulleys, rotating platforms, and light beams demand tighter cooperation between what the player controls as the spirit and what Quill does on the platforming level.
On PSVR2, the sequel uses higher resolution, HDR, and gaze tracking to render the overgrown ruins, underground temples, and mechanical constructs that form the backdrop of a larger world in even greater detail. Haptic feedback from the Sense controllers responds to activating mechanisms, combat, and taking control of robots, making the new mechanics feel noticeably distinct from the base actions of the first game. The music continues the fairy-tale, yet at times more dramatic tone of the previous game, and together with Quill's more expressive animation and that of the supporting characters, it deepens the emotional bond the first game built.
Moss: Book II was received as a successful expansion of a proven formula, offering more content, more elaborate puzzles, and a more epic conclusion to the story without abandoning the intimate, personal tone that sets the series apart from more action-heavy VR titles. Reviewers particularly praised how the new robot-control mechanics broaden the puzzle repertoire without disrupting the clarity and gentle atmosphere for which the first game was known. The PSVR2 version ranks among the most acclaimed sequels of one of the most beloved VR stories and is often recommended to those who loved the first game and want to spend more time in Quill's world with a more complete, satisfying story arc.
Why play it: For fans of the first game who want to spend more time in Quill's world with more elaborate puzzles and a more complete, satisfying story, without the game losing its intimate, gentle tone.
