Metro Awakening

VR akční adventura / horor 2024 Vertigo Games Metro ⏱ Medium · ~3–10 h

A VR prequel to Metro 2033 from the creators of Arizona Sunshine; a doctor searches for his wife in the tunnels.

Metro Awakening is a VR prequel to the Metro series, set before the events of Metro 2033. It follows the young doctor Serdar, who searches for his missing wife in the Moscow metro, infested with mutants and fractured by factional fighting. Vertigo Games, the creators of Arizona Sunshine, brought the series' signature elements into VR - limited ammo, manually reloading weapons, wiping the fogged-up gas mask, and the tension of walking through dark tunnels where every step and every whisper can be heard. Like previous entries in the series, it emphasizes moral choices that affect the story's ending, as well as improvised repairs and crafting gear from scavenged materials on the go. The world consists of interconnected metro stations inhabited by factions such as the Order, the Reich, or the Communists, among whom the player must skillfully navigate to survive.

On PlayStation VR2, Metro Awakening released simultaneously with the other versions on November 7, 2024, and benefits from the PlayStation 5's power, offering more detailed environments and better lighting than the wireless Quest version. The PlayStation VR2 Sense controllers also add adaptive triggers that simulate resistance when pulling a pistol's trigger or pumping a faulty flashlight, along with haptic feedback directly in the headset, so explosions and impacts can be felt on your head as well, deepening the atmosphere of the infested metro even further. The game also supports high-precision head and hand tracking, which makes handling weapons and objects feel convincing.

Why play it: For PlayStation 5 owners with PSVR2, this is the technically richest console version of the game, which, thanks to the adaptive triggers and haptic feedback in the headset, deepens the feeling of immersion in the infested metro. Anyone who wants to experience the Metro Awakening horror with the highest graphical fidelity on console and the most haptic detail should reach for this version. The combination of adaptive triggers, haptic feedback, and sharper graphics makes the PSVR2 version the technically most well-rounded experience on console.
