Patapon 3
Patapon 3 concludes the original PSP trilogy in which players use rhythmic drumming to command an army of adorable one-eyed warriors. The core principle remains the same as in the previous entries - using four drum rhythms, players give orders to march, attack, defend, or use special abilities, and must input them precisely on the musical beat, otherwise the unit loses morale and stops obeying, which becomes a decisive factor between victory and defeat in more hectic battles. This time, the story puts individual heroes front and center instead of an anonymous crowd, which shifts the game's focus toward more distinct characters and their personal quests, unlike the mass battles of the first two games, where the size of the army mattered most.
A new feature of the third game is the shift of part of the combat to one-on-one duels, where a chosen Hero fights alone against enemy bosses, while the rest of the army acts as support in the background, granting the hero combat buffs according to the chosen rhythm. The game also simplifies some systems from the second entry to be more accessible to newcomers, but retains the deep engagement with rhythm and gear upgrades that makes the series a unique combination of strategy and music game. Multiplayer co-op over an ad-hoc network remains an important part of the endgame content and allows players to assemble a team of heroes who together face the game's toughest challenges, including large boss fights designed specifically for group play, alongside rewards that also work well for playing the story campaign solo.
Why play it: Patapon 3 is the best choice for players who already know the first two games and want to see how the series arrived at its rhythmic action climax on the PSP. Thanks to its focus on individual heroes and one-on-one duels, it offers a somewhat different feel than the purely strategic previous entries, and it's also the series' last major PSP game before the Patapon brand went quiet for a long time and moved elsewhere.
