MotorStorm: Arctic Edge
MotorStorm: Arctic Edge from 2009 brings the MotorStorm brand's brutal offroad racing to the ice and snow of Alaska for the first time. Development was handled by Bigbig Studios, which had also worked on the first game in the series, and it adapted the iconic mix of motorbikes, buggies, ATVs, and monster trucks to the portable PSP, which was quite a technical challenge in 2009 given how demanding the previous entries had been on home console performance.
Instead of the series' muddy canyons, this time the game offers snowy slopes, frozen lakes, and glacier tracks, where the physics of driving change - skids are sharper, the surface less predictable, and even a small mistake in a turn can send a vehicle off the track. The game introduces a new Rewind system that lets players go back a few seconds after a crash, which compensates for the aggressive AI opponents typical of the series and makes the handheld version a bit more accessible for newcomers. Despite the PSP's performance limitations, it managed to keep a large number of vehicles on track at once along with impressive destruction animations, thanks to which Arctic Edge retains the typical chaotic feel of mass pile-ups the series is famous for, even on a small display. The career mode also gradually unlocks more demanding vehicle classes and forces players to pick the right machine for a given track, similar to the series' home console entries, so Arctic Edge retains the structure of a full-fledged MotorStorm even on a handheld, not merely a simplified spin-off of it. The sound of the engines, cracking ice, and roaring racing fields also remained unexpectedly rich despite the limitations of the PSP's small speakers.
Why play it: Arctic Edge is the right choice for PSP owners who want to experience MotorStorm's adrenaline-fueled racing on the go - the pacing, vehicle destruction, and dangerous shortcuts all work well even on a small display. The snowy setting also gives the series a fresh visual identity compared to the muddy PlayStation 3 entries and offers different tactical options, since ice and snow behave differently from mud and rock.
