Crisis Core -Final Fantasy VII- Reunion
Crisis Core -Final Fantasy VII- Reunion is a reworked version of the 2007 PSP title that tells the prequel to the legendary Final Fantasy VII from the perspective of Zack Fair, a young and ambitious SOLDIER trooper striving for the same reputation as his idol, Sephiroth. The game combines a real-time action battle system with an element of chance through the Digital Mind Wave mechanic, a constantly spinning slot wheel that unlocks special abilities, spells, and limit breaks as you play, setting it apart in gameplay terms from the rest of the series' more traditional turn-based battles.
For current platforms including PS5, Reunion has been completely reworked graphically — characters, environments, and battles all received a modern visual makeover closer in style to Final Fantasy VII Remake, while the original story, dialogue, and overall structure remain faithful to the PSP source material. Players once again relive Zack's fate, his friendship with Angeal and Sephiroth, and his relationship with Cloud and Aerith, gaining crucial emotional context for the events that follow in the main game and the Remake series.
Reunion's reception upon its 2022 release was largely positive, with particular praise for modernizing the visually dated original and making accessible a story long tied to the PSP handheld and thus out of reach for many players. For Final Fantasy VII fans, it's an important piece of the puzzle that lends emotional weight to events hinted at in the Remake series, and also one of the best-received modernizations of an older Square Enix title. Its short playtime compared to the series' larger entries also makes it a suitable entry point for players who want to dive into the world of Final Fantasy VII before the main game without investing dozens of hours, while the emotionally powerful ending remains to this day one of the most cited moments in the entire Final Fantasy VII saga.
Why play it: For Final Fantasy VII fans wanting to understand the emotional backdrop of events from the Remake series, and for newcomers looking for a shorter, accessible entry point into its world without the extra dozens of hours.
