Resident Evil Village
Resident Evil Village, the eighth entry in the main series, followed on from the events of Resident Evil 7 and returned players to the role of Ethan Winters, who, after several peaceful years with his family, finds himself amid a snowbound village full of mutants, vampire women, and terrifying cults while trying to find his kidnapped daughter. The game combines the previous entry's first-person perspective with a markedly more action-oriented pace, closer to the style of the classic Resident Evil 4.
The village and its surroundings, including the gothic castle of Lady Dimitrescu, a mill, a fishing village, and underground laboratories, form a series of varied, densely atmospheric settings the player moves through while solving puzzles, managing a limited inventory, and fighting mutated enemies with firearms bought and upgraded from the mysterious merchant Duke. The game skillfully alternates the tension of survival horror with more intense action segments, including major boss fights, and ran technically very solidly on PS4, with detailed lighting and a dense atmosphere heightened by impressive sound design and music.
The game also included a bonus Mercenaries mode for fast, score-based battles against waves of enemies, and offered a short pre-release demo that helped build major anticipation thanks to the sequence set in Lady Dimitrescu's castle. The crafting and weapon-upgrading system at merchant Duke's shop motivated players to explore the environment carefully and gather materials, which linked the game's survival elements to its more action-focused core in a natural, unforced way.
Village received largely positive reception at launch for its varied settings, its return to a more action-oriented yet still tense take on the series, and unforgettable characters like the towering Lady Dimitrescu, who quickly became a pop-culture phenomenon. The game confirmed that Capcom can successfully balance survival horror and action, and it is regarded as one of the high points of the modern Resident Evil era, one that introduced the series to a wider audience in an accessible way.
Why play it: For fans of varied settings and a balanced mix of survival horror and action, Village offers one of the high points of the modern Resident Evil era, accessible even to newcomers to the series.
