Resident Evil Village
Resident Evil Village picks up directly from the events of Resident Evil 7 and transports the player to a snow-covered village surrounded by a gothic castle, swamps, and ancient buildings, ruled over by supernatural beings led by the mysterious Lady Dimitrescu. The game combines first-person exploration, combat with firearms and knives, and puzzle-solving, gradually alternating dark horror atmosphere with more action-heavy sections that recall survival action more than the pure horror of the previous entry. A crafting system, trading with a mysterious merchant named Duke, and exploring a castle full of locked doors and hidden treasures keep the pacing balanced between tension and the reward of careful exploration. The game gradually leads the player through several strikingly different locations, from the aforementioned castle through a swampy lake to an industrial factory, each offering its own type of enemies and puzzles.
On Xbox Series X and S the game runs smoothly at high resolution with fast loading, allowing for nearly seamless transitions between locations without noticeable delays. The sound design and music round out the depressing, yet at times almost baroquely opulent atmosphere of the village and its inhabitants, while the graphics were among the most technically advanced on consoles at the time of release. The reception at launch was very positive, with players and reviewers praising the series' willingness to move toward more varied environments and more diverse enemies compared to the claustrophobic interiors of the seventh installment.
Village still works today as an entry point into the series for new players thanks to its accessible controls and clearly readable goals, while also serving as a celebration of classic survival horror with a modern polish. Additional content in the form of expansions and an alternative third-person perspective further extended the game's lifespan after launch. Its influence on the genre shows especially in how naturally it blends fast action shootouts with slower, tense exploration of the environment. Even years later, it remains one of the most accessible entry points into the Resident Evil universe, both visually and in terms of gameplay.
Why play it: For newcomers to the series, it's an accessible entry point with clearly readable goals; for veterans, it's a celebration of classic survival horror with a modern polish and a natural blend of action and tense exploration.
