An atmospheric walking simulator conducted over a radio in the forests of Wyoming.

Firewatch is a short, atmospheric first-person adventure in which the player takes on the role of Henry, a man fleeing his own crumbling life to a remote fire lookout post in Wyoming in 1989. Most of the game unfolds through radio conversations with his supervisor Delilah, as the player walks through the forest, completes small lookout duties, and gradually uncovers strange happenings around him that slowly grow from a calm summer stroll into a paranoid thriller with a hint of conspiracy. Mechanically, it's more of a so-called walking simulator with a map, compass, and radio than an action game - the emphasis is on exploring the landscape, naturally written dialogue, and building the relationship between the two main characters. The player sets their own pace for walking through each section of forest, so it's entirely possible to just stop and listen to the surrounding nature, which only heightens the sense of isolation in the wilderness.

On PS4, the title stood out chiefly for its striking visual style with a rich color palette inspired by American national parks, and for its quality voice acting, which carries the entire story without a single face on screen besides Henry's hands. The gameplay is deliberately simple and undemanding on reflexes, but the environment is designed to reward attentive players with small details, notes, and side discoveries scattered across the whole map.

Firewatch became one of the most cited examples of the walking sim genre and showed that even a game without combat, an inventory, or complex mechanics can tell a powerful, emotionally memorable story about loneliness and escaping reality. It is still praised today chiefly for its precise dialogue writing and its ability to evoke a sense of tension and uncertainty using nothing but the environment, the sound of the forest, and a voice on the radio. The game's short length also proved to be an asset, since the story never drags things out and ends before the initial sense of mystery could wear off.

Why play it: For players craving an emotionally powerful story without combat or an inventory, Firewatch offers precisely written dialogue and tension created purely by the environment, the sound of the forest, and a voice on the radio, all in a satisfyingly short playtime.
