Need for Speed Heat
Need for Speed Heat places the series in the fictional city of Palm City, inspired by Miami, and builds on the contrast between legal daytime races that earn money for car upgrades and illegal nighttime races that bring the reputation needed to unlock the best parts and more powerful upgrades, while also drawing the attention of a corrupt police force willing to resort to aggressive and dangerous tactics. This day/night cycle gives the game a different dynamic from previous series installments and forces the player to choose between caution and risk on every trip into the open world, since accumulated reputation can be lost if arrested by police. The car roster includes a wide range of sports and luxury cars that can be customized both in terms of performance and visually with wraps, rims, and body kit accessories.
On PS4 the game offers extensive visual and performance tuning options, an open world full of side activities, and a strongly stylized night atmosphere supported by neon lighting and an electronic and hip-hop music selection accompanying both driving and menus. Police chases during night races are among the game's most thrilling moments, requiring quick decisions between fleeing, hiding in side streets, and continuing the ongoing race. The game also allows shared play in the open world with other players, who can join in shared races or chases.
Upon release, Need for Speed Heat was received as a significant improvement over the previous installment, Payback, praised especially for returning emphasis to car customization and a deeper, more thrilling police chase system. With this title, Ghost Games showed that the series still has something to offer fans of arcade street racing even after several weaker installments that had noticeably drifted from the series' roots. Today the game serves as a solid choice for players seeking a stylized, action-packed arcade racing experience with a strong night atmosphere and a heavy emphasis on car customization.
Why play it: For fans of stylized arcade street racing - a significant improvement over the weaker Payback, with a return to emphasis on car customization and more thrilling police chases in a night atmosphere.
