A detective puzzle where a magic pocket watch replays the scene of a death; guess three fates at once.

Return of the Obra Dinn released on PlayStation 4 in 2020, two years after its original PC release, bringing to the console one of the most original detective concepts in the history of games. Playing an insurance investigator, the player boards the abandoned ship Obra Dinn, which returned after years without its crew, and uses a magic pocket watch to replay, at the site of each person's last cry, the frozen moment of their death and freely walk through it as if among statues. The task is to deduce, from these frozen scenes, sounds and tiny clues, the name, fate and cause of death of all sixty people aboard, with the game confirming findings only when the player correctly guesses all three parts of a fate at once.

The whole title runs in a striking monochrome style inspired by old computer monitors and a technique known as 1-bit dithering, which gives the investigation a specific, almost archival character while still allowing detailed reading of faces and scenes without unnecessary visual noise. The game has no hints in the traditional sense — the player must connect accents, uniforms, dialogue and the context of individual snapshots and build an extensive system of deduction themselves in the accompanying logbook, which makes the satisfaction of each correctly guessed identity all the greater. The sound design, built on real voice recordings rather than text, gives the individual scenes surprising emotional weight despite the sparse graphics, and even small details like a sailor's accent or an officer's tone of voice often turn out to be the key clue.

Return of the Obra Dinn received extraordinary acclaim for its utterly unique narrative and gameplay concept, which barely resembles any other game on the market, and it is often cited as one of the best-designed logic titles of its time, compared even to the author's previous game Papers, Please. On PS4 it found a further audience that appreciated just how patient and rewarding pure detective thinking can be without action or time pressure.

Why play it: For players who want to savor pure detective thinking without time pressure or action — a unique narrative concept from the creators of Papers, Please that has no equal on the market.
