Inside
Inside is the second game from Danish studio Playdead and ranks among the most distinctive independent titles ever released on PlayStation 4. You control a nameless boy in a red shirt fleeing through a dark, industrial-looking world full of patrols, dogs, and a vaguely defined authority. The game contains not a single line of dialogue or explanatory text; all storytelling happens purely through imagery and the situations the player is dropped into. The foundation is classic platforming, meaning running, jumping, dragging crates, and swimming, but the real content lies in physics-based puzzles that must be solved before your pursuer catches up.
The design proceeds in small, carefully measured steps. Every new mechanic, whether it's controlling a procession of limp bodies, a submarine, or flipping gravity in a laboratory, is first introduced in a safe form before it becomes a trap. Death is frequent, yet checkpoints sit so close together that repetition never feels frustrating and instead gives the whole journey a rhythm. Progress is strictly linear, the game never stops to explain itself with a tutorial, and it relies on you working out the rules yourself. A playthrough takes only a few hours, but with virtually no dead spots, and a web of hidden secrets invites a second run.
Technically, it's a textbook example of how striking a game with a limited color palette can look. The environments rest on muted grays and browns, into which the boy's red shirt cuts sharply, and the camera holds a fixed side view with a great depth of field. The soundtrack is equally sparing, offering rumbles, static, and ticking instead of melodies, which in key scenes turns into an unsettling pressure. Critics welcomed the game exceptionally warmly upon release, and its stark ending in particular became the subject of endless interpretation. To this day, Inside is cited as proof that an independent platformer can be more narratively ambitious than most projects with a giant budget, and on PS4 it has aged practically without a single wrinkle.
