Inside
Inside is a dark platform adventure in which you control a boy in a red shirt fleeing through a landscape that gradually shifts from forest through research complexes to places that are hard to describe without spoiling them. The game doesn't use a single word, no dialogue or text of any kind, and yet its storytelling is surprisingly clear. Everything is conveyed through the environment, the behavior of background characters, and scenes glimpsed out of the corner of your eye as you keep running. This trust in imagery alone makes Inside one of the strongest examples of wordless storytelling in the entire medium.
The gameplay is deliberately simple. You run, jump, swim, drag crates, and solve physics puzzles that are never there for their own sake and almost always fit into the events around you. The game regularly introduces a new idea, whether controlling other characters, working with a shockwave, or diving into the depths, and each motif is used only as long as it's needed. Tension arises because death comes quickly and often unpleasantly graphically, so even a mundane obstacle carries weight. The whole playthrough lasts roughly four hours, and the game keeps its pace from start to finish.
The visuals rely on a muted palette, strong silhouettes, and lighting that turns every shot into a deliberate composition; the camera stays at a distance, letting the scale of the environment stand out. On PC the game runs smoothly and is technically among the cleanest titles of its kind. Sound matters just as much as image; the music is more a muted pulse than a melody, and in key scenes it works with silence instead. The title followed the same studio's previous game, and its reception was exceptionally warm, especially for its atmosphere and its ambiguous ending, still debated today. Inside still feels perfectly tight today and ranks among the best the independent scene has offered. It works especially well played through in a single sitting, since the pacing of the story is built to let tension grow steadily toward the final stretch.
