Silent Hill HD Collection

Survival horor 2012 Hijinx Studios Silent Hill ⏱ Long · ~10–30 h 🔞 18+

A remastered collection of Silent Hill 2 and 3 for one console generation.

Silent Hill HD Collection bundles together remastered versions of the second and third installments of the series, namely Silent Hill 2 and Silent Hill 3, which many players and critics consider the peak of the whole brand. The aim of the collection was to make both titles accessible to a new generation of players on PlayStation 3 at an upgraded resolution, with reworked lighting and minor control tweaks, without touching the story structure or puzzles themselves.

Unlike similar remasters of other series, however, the collection wasn't met with a warm reception. The port wasn't handled by the original Japanese studio but by an external team, which lost part of the source files during the process and had to partially reconstruct the game - the result was missing sound effects, altered music compared to the original, and noticeably worse fog effects, which had been key to the atmosphere of both games. Fans thus criticized the collection for offering a degraded version of iconic games instead of a faithful remaster.

Even so, the HD Collection remains, for many players, the only convenient way to play both games together on a PlayStation 3 console, and despite its technical shortcomings it still offers the core of what makes Silent Hill 2 and 3 genre classics - psychologically dense stories, iconic enemies, and music whose atmosphere still works despite the degraded sound quality.

Why play it: For players without access to the PS2 originals who want to experience Silent Hill 2 and 3 on one console and can accept that the sound and visuals are noticeably weaker than the originals.
