A Nordic province plagued by dragons; one of the most influential open-world RPGs.

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim drops players into a vast Nordic province torn by civil war and the return of dragons from ancient legend. It became one of the most influential open-world RPGs in history, one in which the player, as Dovahkiin, the Dragonborn, can freely choose to fight with a sword, magic, a bow, or hidden intrigue. Bethesda Game Studios built a system of emergent storytelling in which side quests, random encounters, and the modding community generated content stretching dozens, even hundreds of hours beyond the game's original scope.

Skills improved through plain use, so the character shaped itself according to how the player actually played rather than a chart chosen at the outset. Dragon Shouts, assembled from words of power found in ancient tombs, gave combat a language of its own, whether knocking back an enemy or slowing down time. The Radiant system, generating dynamic side quests based on the player's current location and reputation, gave the world a sense of endless playability. On PS3, however, the game struggled with technical issues, including the infamous save-file corruption during extended play caused by the console's limited memory, which drew criticism and required later patches to fix.

Even so, the enormous scale of the world, the freedom of choice, and the atmosphere of Nordic mythology made the game a commercial phenomenon that sold tens of millions of copies across platforms and was repeatedly re-released in remastered versions. Skyrim definitively cemented the open-world fantasy RPG as a mainstream genre, and its influence is visible in countless successors. For the PS3, it stood as proof that even technically demanding, large-scale simulations could run on older hardware, albeit at the cost of compromises, while the modding community on the PC version extended the game's impact far beyond the more closed-off console edition. Today Skyrim is remembered chiefly as a game that almost nobody finished the same way, because everyone came away with a different set of stories picked up along the road.
