DmC: Devil May Cry
DmC: Devil May Cry is a bold reboot of the franchise, which Capcom entrusted to the British studio Ninja Theory. Dante is younger and cockier here, living on the fringes of a present-day society ruled by demons who don't control humanity through force but through debt, energy drinks, and the news. A key role is played by Limbo, a parallel layer of the world that pulls you in and actively rebuilds itself around you. Corridors stretch, floors collapse, and walls assemble threats directly out of the plaster. Thanks to this, the platforming sections have far more imagination than most of the competition.
Combat is built around instantly switching between an angelic and a demonic arsenal by holding down the triggers. Angelic weapons are fast and hit multiple targets, demonic ones are slow and crushing, and the game keeps pushing you to mix both, since some enemies are only vulnerable to one type. On top of that you have two grapple attacks, one pulling you toward the enemy and the other pulling the enemy toward you, allowing smooth traversal across the arena and keeping opponents airborne. The result is a more accessible but still flashy action game with a style rating at the end of every encounter.
Technically, the game leans heavily on a very strong visual identity: saturated colors, exaggerated environmental deformation, and inventive boss designs. The soundtrack mixes industrial and drum and bass tones and feels aggressive and modern during fights. Reception was divided. Reviewers largely praised the game for its pacing, visuals, and level design, but part of the long-time fanbase rejected the new take on Dante as well as the lower frame rate compared to previous entries. With time, DmC is viewed more favorably. It's a standalone, stylistically distinctive action game that still looks striking today and plays smoothly and enjoyably. If you're not concerned with the debate over the hero's canonical look and just want a well-crafted action-adventure for a few evenings, DmC is among the best choices you'll find in this genre on PlayStation 3.
