A JRPG set in real early-20th-century history, with Rasputin as the villain.

Shadow Hearts set a classic Japanese RPG within an unusual historical framework of the early twentieth century, where real events and locations, from China through Russia to Europe of the early years of the new century, intertwine with occultism, demons and supernatural forces inspired by the real historical figure of Rasputin, who appears in the story as one of the main antagonists. The player accompanies Yuri Hyuga, a young man capable of transforming into a demon and absorbing the souls of defeated monsters, on a journey to rescue the kidnapped girl Alice, encountering along the way a colorful group of companions with their own distinctive abilities and dark secrets from their own pasts.

The game's key innovation was the so-called Judgment Ring, a turn-based combat system requiring precise button timing on a rotating ring to successfully land an attack, which added an action-based, reflex-driven element to the traditional turn-based combat genre and set Shadow Hearts apart from competing JRPGs. The ring was also used outside of combat, for example during shopping or healing, making it a unified interface for the entire game, and its segments could be upgraded, directly tying character progression to player skill. Yuri's transformations also required managing so-called fusion, where excessive use of demonic forms took a psychological toll on the character. The dark, gothic tone of the narrative, combined with moments of black humor and a surprisingly frank treatment of violence and horror, gave the game an unmistakable atmosphere distinct from the dominant Japanese RPG series of the time.

Although the game sold modestly in the West and wasn't among the most polished titles of the early PlayStation 2 era technically, it earned a loyal cult following and is still valued today as one of the most distinctive and atmospherically powerful JRPGs of its generation, one players return to precisely for its unusual setting.
