Rival Schools: United by Fate
Rival Schools: United by Fate is a fighting game from Capcom that made the jump from arcade cabinets, where it had debuted the year before, to PlayStation in 1999, offering an unusual setting for its battles among high school students defending their schools. The player assembles three-member teams of characters with their own personalities and motivations and takes them through a tournament full of striking, cleanly animated fights that play out in schoolyards, hallways, on rooftops, and in gymnasiums.
The game introduced a team battle system with the ability to perform joint super moves involving two characters at once, as well as special team techniques, an unusual and refreshing element for the fighting genre at the time. The light, almost comic-book tone of the story, complemented by cinematic cutscenes, gave the game the character of a youthful school drama rather than a traditional martial arts tournament, earning it a distinct identity separate from other Capcom fighters such as Street Fighter or Darkstalkers, which relied on a more traditional tournament framework. The PlayStation version also added a bonus trading-card-style mode in which characters could collect cards and unlock additional content, including hidden characters and alternate costumes.
Visually, the game relied on clean 3D character models and clear, colorful arenas full of destructible environmental elements, while the music underscored the energetic, youthful tone of the whole game. Critics praised the originality of the concept, its accessibility for newcomers, and its distinctive humor, though against the competition of Tekken and Soul Blade it remained a rather niche affair, despite the loyal fanbase it earned through its distinctive take on the genre. Today, Rival Schools is valued as one of the most distinctive Capcom fighters of the PlayStation generation and a direct inspiration for later team-based fighting games, including its own sequel.
Why play: Anyone craving a distinctive Capcom fighter with an energetic tone and team battles will find accessibility for newcomers along with the inspiration behind later team-based fighting games.
