The Blue Bomber's first full 2D-3D treatment; PlayStation alongside Saturn.

Mega Man 8 was the first mainline entry to receive a full 2D-3D treatment on the new console generation, with PlayStation becoming its main platform alongside Sega Saturn. The Blue Bomber once again faces Dr. Wily, this time in a battle over a mysterious meteorite holding an enormous amount of energy, and the player works through eight stages controlled by robot bosses, as usual in any order they choose. Alongside the classic Mega Man, his robotic dog Rush is once again on hand, as is the friendly robot Auto, who offers upgrades and add-ons between missions.

The gameplay stays true to the series' classic formula – precise jumping, shooting, and acquiring weapons from defeated bosses, which then serve as the next boss's weakness. Mega Man 8, however, significantly upgraded the visuals and presentation: fully voiced animated cutscenes, more colorful and detailed environments, and new abilities like the charge shot added a new dimension to the game without abandoning its identity. The move to CD media let Capcom expand the soundtrack as well as the length and detail of individual stages, a noticeable leap forward for the series.

It's precisely this combination of nostalgia and modernization that makes it an important milestone in the series' history. For many players of the 1990s, it was their first encounter with Mega Man in fully animated audiovisual form, and thanks in part to that, the title still holds a reputation as one of the most accessible entry points into the classic line today, even though it occasionally struggled with somewhat uneven stage difficulty.

Why play it: For the precise platforming action of the classic series elevated by period audiovisual presentation with full voice acting.
