C: The Contra Adventure

run and gun (2.5D akce) 1998 Appaloosa Interactive Contra ⏱ Medium · ~3–10 h

An action run-and-gun with a view into 2.5D space, another spin-off of the Contra series.

C: The Contra Adventure was developed by studio Appaloosa Interactive as a spinoff from the main Contra series, featuring its own hero named C and a different, darker visual style compared to the series' classic entries. The game remains faithful to the run-and-gun roots of the brand – the player moves through levels full of enemies, collects various types of weapons, and faces large bosses – but shifts from the traditional side view to a pseudo-three-dimensional presentation, which allowed for deeper perspective and more dramatic camera angles typical of the PlayStation of the time, and different from the series' long-established style.

Visually, the game relied on rendered environments and character models, similar to other action titles of the era that used the console's early 3D hardware, giving it a different, darker tone than the classic 2D entries of Contra. The controls combined movement through space with precise shooting, and the camera often changed viewing angle to emphasize the action or the scale of the environment, which for some players meant an unusual sense of orientation compared to the straightforward side-scrolling platformers of previous series entries. The difficulty remained high in the spirit of the series, with an emphasis on precisely dodging fire and quick reactions, which had long been a defining trait of the entire Contra brand.

C: The Contra Adventure divided the series' fanbase with its departure from the established visual style and conception of the main hero, and it tends to be ranked among the brand's more controversial spinoffs rather than among its high points. Still, it remains an interesting example of how an established 2D action series tried to find its place in the era of emerging 3D gaming on the original PlayStation, when a number of long-successful brands were experimenting with new technical and visual approaches. For collectors and fans of unusual spinoffs, the game remains an interesting item to explore today, even with the awareness that it departs from the series' classic formula.
