Mega Man II
Mega Man II for the Game Boy is the second installment of the famous action series' standalone handheld branch, and builds on the structure introduced by the first title, Dr. Wily's Revenge. The player again goes through a series of themed levels, defeats robotic bosses, and collects their weapons, which are then used to exploit the weaknesses of other opponents and to unlock hidden areas within the levels. The selection of bosses draws from several NES entries, so the game feels like a kind of remix of the series' most popular moments, carefully adapted for the smaller screen and different hardware. Between boss fights, the player goes through shorter but dense levels full of elevators, pits, and small enemies that test both aim and jumping precision.
The level design is again more compact than on the NES, but retains the characteristic difficulty and precise platforming controls that fans of the series had long been used to. The player must continue to precisely time jumps between platforms and sliding passages while dodging projectiles and hordes of small enemies. The graphics use sharp black-and-white contrasts so that enemies and projectiles remain clearly distinguishable on the small display even during fast action sequences. The musical accompaniment offers energetic tracks adapted to the Game Boy's sound capabilities, which, despite the hardware limitations, capture the atmosphere of the NES original well.
Within the Game Boy's handheld Mega Man line, this was another step in the gradual refinement of the concept, and the game was well received as a reliable sequel that offered fans more content in the same proven style. Its influence on the genre lies mainly in showing how to maintain the quality of an action platformer even on limited hardware, without sacrificing difficulty or precision of control. Today it's seen as a solid, if less famous, part of the broader Mega Man history on handhelds, appreciated mainly by collectors and loyal fans of the series.
Why play it: Thanks to a reliable sequel with the same difficulty and precise controls, it will especially please loyal fans and collectors of the handheld Mega Man line.
