The Blue Bomber returns and can slide for the first time; for many, the strongest classic entry in the series.

The Blue Bomber returns — and this time he slides. Mega Man 3 follows up on the legendary second game at a time when the series was at its peak, and adds elements that became a permanent part of the brand. For many fans, the third game is just as strong a candidate for the best classic installment as its famous predecessor.

The game's core remains faithful to the proven formula: you choose the order of the eight robot bosses, steal their weapons and forge them into a rock-paper-scissors strategy against the other enemies. This loop of choice, experimentation and reward is still one of the smartest designs in the genre, and the third game develops it with the confidence of a series at the height of its powers.

The key innovation is the slide, which gives Mega Man an entirely new move — dodging projectiles, sliding under obstacles and a faster pace of combat. The robot dog Rush was also added, a loyal companion able to transform into a springboard or a means of transport. Both of these innovations became so iconic that the series carried them for the rest of its existence.

Visually and musically, the third game holds to the high bar of the NES era: sharp, legible graphics and a catchy chiptune soundtrack that beautifully underscores the pace of the action. The difficulty remains present, but fair — the game rewards skill and knowledge of the mechanics, not chance.

Mega Man 3 is thus proof that even a sequel in the shadow of a revered second game can bring meaningful innovations and an identity of its own. It belongs in the essential kit of anyone who wants to know the golden era of action platformers on the NES.

Why play: For a top-tier action platformer that adds the slide and the dog Rush to the proven formula — elements that forever changed the face of the series.
