Chaser
Chaser is an action shooter from 2003 by the Slovak studio Cauldron, which takes the player into a sci-fi future where the main character, suffering from memory loss, gradually learns the truth about his origins amid a large-scale conflict between powerful corporations and resistance factions fighting for independence. The gameplay combines classic corridor-based shooting with a fairly wide range of weapons and environments, which shift throughout the game between industrial complexes, futuristic cities, and exotic locations, including an unexpected and inventive detour into the past during World War II, where the hero relives memories tied to his own identity.
The game relied on a cinematic narrative style with cutscenes, voiced dialogue, and a fairly branching story, which at the time of release set it apart from a number of competing shooters focused purely on action without deeper context. Technically, it was a solidly crafted title with detailed environments for its time and varied locations; the music accompanied the action sequences with dynamic tracks, while the quieter, exploratory sections built on a tense, mysterious atmosphere of uncovering the hero's past.
Chaser didn't achieve the same acclaim as its big foreign competitors and remained a rather marginal title on the international scale, but among players in Central Europe it is still remembered as a quality homegrown effort that showed a Slovak development team could hold its own against the action blockbusters of its time. It remains an interesting reminder of a period when the region established itself as a respected source of quality FPS titles with the ambition to tell a real story. The game also tried to tie its individual chapters into a meaningful whole, in which the player gradually understands why the main character is passing through these particular places and memories. In its time, Chaser was one of the few homegrown projects that dared to be compared with big-budget foreign shooters in terms of both storytelling and scope.
Why play it: For fans of retro shooters, it's a reminder of a time when a Slovak team managed to hold its own alongside big foreign competitors with a well-thought-out story.
