It expands the first Descent with new environments, from ice caves to alien complexes.

Descent II expanded the concept of the first game with new weapons, enemies, and more varied environments, from ice caves to volcanic, organic, and alien complexes, softening the impression of repetitive metal tunnels that the first game occasionally could not avoid. The core gameplay remained the same – the player pilots a small spacecraft through the mazes of mining complexes with six degrees of freedom of movement, destroying robotic guards and seeking a way to escape, but thanks to an improved engine the environments looked more colorful and varied than in the original game. New secondary weapons were also added, such as guided missiles, a plasma cannon, and special mines, and a new type of enemy, including smarter robots, required different combat tactics. The game also featured so-called thief robots that stole the player's supplies and guide-bots that, on request, showed the way out of the maze, addressing one of the frequent orientation problems of the first game.

On DOS machines of the second half of the nineties, the game benefited from faster processors and offered smoother performance even at higher resolutions, though it still retained the dense, technical look typical of textured 3D polygons of its era. The sound design and atmospheric electronic music continued in the vein of the first game and supported well the feeling of lonely exploration of dangerous underground complexes full of traps and hidden passages. The game also expanded multiplayer options and offered a more elaborate set of maps designed specifically for multiplayer battles, including new game modes beyond the classic deathmatch.

Descent II is still valued today as a more mature and balanced sequel that developed the strengths of the original without changing its core identity built on free movement in space. Together with its predecessor, it defined the six-degrees-of-freedom action subgenre and remained a favorite target for fans looking for an alternative to the traditional corridor shooters of the time, even though this type of gameplay ultimately remained a rather niche corner of the genre.
