One of the bloodiest titles on the Build engine; Caleb takes revenge on the cult that killed him.

Blood is among the darkest and bloodiest titles built on the Build engine, the same technology that powered Duke Nukem 3D. The player takes on the role of Caleb, an undead gunslinger seeking revenge on a cult called the Cabal that once betrayed and killed him, moving through cemeteries, abandoned mansions, circuses, sewers, and other horror-themed locations full of traps, hidden passages, and grotesque violence. Weapons such as dynamite, a shotgun, a chainsaw, and a voodoo hat firing spiritual energy, combined with victims falling apart in pieces and enemies set on fire, earned the game a reputation as one of the most brutal shooters of its generation, even compared to other Build engine titles.

Beyond the violence, Blood is also known for its black humor, its many film and literary references to classic horror movies, from Evil Dead to the works of H. P. Lovecraft, and its unusually atmospheric sound design, where creaking doors, distant laughter, and Caleb's sarcastic one-liners created a mood that was oppressive yet playful at the same time. The Build engine enabled detailed interactive environments on DOS computers, including destructible objects, collapsing floors, and dynamic lighting, which, despite the technical limitations of the era, made the game feel alive and unpredictable. The high difficulty the game offered, especially at the harder difficulty settings, was among the toughest in the entire genre and required careful planning of one's approach.

Although Blood could not match Duke Nukem 3D in commercial success, it still enjoys cult status among players today thanks to its difficulty, atmosphere, and horror treatment, which was fairly unusual for the FPS genre at the time. Many fans still consider it one of the high points of the Build engine, a game that brought a darker, rawer tone back to the genre after a wave of lighter titles, all without giving up its own distinctive sense of humor.
